Natural Gas Safety: What Every BC Homeowner Should Know

Natural gas powers millions of BC homes — furnaces, water heaters, stoves, fireplaces, and outdoor appliances. When installed and maintained correctly, it's a safe and reliable energy source. The key word is correctly: gas work in BC must be performed by a licensed gas fitter, and there are good reasons for that requirement.

Natural gas is odourless in its pure form. A chemical called mercaptan is added specifically so that leaks are detectable — it produces the characteristic rotten egg smell. If you detect this odour inside your home:

Carbon monoxide (CO) is produced by incomplete combustion of natural gas and other fuels. It is colourless, odourless, and extremely dangerous. BC building code requires CO detectors in homes with fuel-burning appliances. Replace CO detectors every 5–7 years (check the manufacturer's date on the back). Symptoms of CO exposure — headache, nausea, dizziness — often mimic flu. If you suspect CO exposure, get outside immediately.

Annual inspection and cleaning of gas appliances — furnaces, boilers, water heaters, and fireplaces — helps maintain efficiency and catches developing issues before they become dangerous. Cracked heat exchangers, blocked flues, and failing burners are all issues that routine servicing can identify.

In BC, all natural gas installation, modification, and repair work must be performed by a licensed gas fitter holding a valid TSBC (Technical Safety BC) ticket. This includes gas line extensions, appliance connections, and BBQ hookups. DIY gas work is illegal in BC and voids home insurance in the event of an incident.
