Burst or Leaking Pipe

  1. 1Shut off the main water supply immediately (usually near the water meter or where the line enters the building).
  2. 2Turn off the water heater if it runs on the line affected.
  3. 3Open a low faucet to drain remaining pressure from the pipes.

No Heat — Boiler or Furnace Failure

  1. 1Check that your thermostat is set correctly and has power.
  2. 2Check the furnace or boiler for error codes or indicator lights.

What counts as a plumbing emergency?

A plumbing emergency is any situation that risks property damage, health, or safety if not addressed quickly. What should I do if a pipe bursts while you're closed?

Shut off your main water supply immediately — this is the single most important action. This valve is usually located where the supply line enters your home (utility room, crawl space, or near the meter). Leave the valve shut and call us first thing when we open. If you don't know where your shutoff is, this is a good time to find it before an emergency occurs.

What if I smell gas?

Leave the building immediately without operating any switches. Call FortisBC's 24/7 emergency line at 1-800-663-9911 from outside the building. Do not re-enter until FortisBC declares the area safe. Then call Cima Mechanical at (604) 256-8045 for gas line inspection and repair.

My heat stopped working overnight. What should I do?

Check your thermostat settings, furnace filter, and circuit breaker first. If the furnace or boiler won't restart or shows an error code, call (604) 256-8045 as soon as we open. In cold weather, we prioritize heating failures, particularly for households with young children, seniors, or medical needs.

How do I shut off my water in an emergency?

Your main shut-off valve is usually located where the water line enters your home — in the utility room, crawl space, or near the water meter. Gate valves (round handle) turn clockwise to close. Ball valves (lever handle) turn 90 degrees to close. If your main valve is stuck or won't close, call us immediately.
